The word "antibiotic" is derived from the Greek anti meaning "against" and bios which denotes "life" (a bacterium is a life form). Antibiotics are effective medications prescribed to treat bacterial infections. If taken in the right way, antibiotics can save lives. They either kill microorganisms completely or impede their multiplication. Your body's natural defenses can usually take it from there. Most antibiotics have got two names, the brand name created by the manufacturer, and a generic name based on chemical properties of antibiotics. Antibiotics do not combat viral infections, such as colds, influenza, most coughs and bronchitis, sore throats unless brought on by streptococcus. A broad-spectrum antibiotic can be taken to treat a wide range of infections. A narrow-spectrum antibiotic is only efficacious against several types of microbes. There are antibiotics that fight aerobic bacteria, while others work against anaerobic microbes. Aerobic bacteria require oxygen, while anaerobic bacteria do not. Antibiotics may be precondition in advance, to prevent an infection, especially before operation. This is called 'preventive' use of antibiotics. They are commonly taken before bowel and orthopaedic surgery. Antibiotics can bring on more harm than good, when they are not taken in properly. Common use and misuse in the sick over time have jeopardized antibiotics' power to fight off bacteria. At present, nearly all bacteria are insensitive to the properties of the potent medications, so that more recently invented antibiotics are sometimes required to combat infections that were once easily treatable. Antibiotics can also lead to complications, for instance vaginal yeast infections and diarrhoea. When you take antibiotics, keep to the instructions. Your dose has been calculated to combat bacteria throughout the course of the illness. Hence, if you do not ending, you may find yourself at the risk of leaving enough germs in your system to restart the infection - even after you are feeling good. The leftover medicine will not be enough to kill the bugs the next time, and it may even make them resistant.
